Technology Director

Euan Stewart

Euan is the Technology Director of Novix IT. His career runs from hands-on engineering through to executive leadership, built around one discipline: securing and scaling IT environments so the businesses that depend on them can simply get on with their work. At Novix he sets the technical and security direction behind the managed IT service for wealth management and accountancy firms.

I don’t measure security by a checklist of tools. I measure it by whether it has actually reduced the risk to a business, no matter how big or small.

Clients don’t get a technician who turns up to fix what is broken. They get someone who plans the roadmap first, cyber security, Microsoft 365, the infrastructure underneath it, then makes sure the day-to-day never strays from it. He is Edinburgh born and bred, and outside the office he is more likely on a mountain bike or driving north for the hills than sitting still.

straight answers

What people ask Euan first

Identity, before anything else. Who can get in, from where, and what they can reach once they are in. Most of the incidents I have dealt with trace back to that question having been answered badly at some point.

It is, as long as you treat it as the plan rather than the certificate. Build the estate to the standard and the assessment becomes a formality. We took the smallest client on our books through it with no remediation required at all.

Anything an engineer repeats more than twice a week that carries no judgement in it. Our own monthly reporting used to take a day and now takes ten minutes, which is about 88 hours a year back for work that does need judgement. The client work itself stays with people.

No, and the discipline does not change with the headcount. The roadmap I would write for an 1,800 user managed service estate is the one I write for 25 users, with the expensive parts left out.
